Family Harbor House Needs Volunteers
Led by the Midcoast Maine Homeless Coalition (MMHC), Family Harbor House opened on January 3, 2026, accepting its first family into the transitional housing facility in 2,200 square feet of space at Belfast United Methodist Church. Family Harbor House provides housing, nutrition, and support for 3 or 4 families at a time, using a mix of hired staff, volunteers, and community partners. With the support of local volunteers at the site, there is support for the families at night.
Please complete the form HERE on the MMHC website linked below to share your interest as a volunteer in this important program to help area families who need a helping hand.
About Volunteering: The UU Church of Belfast (UUCB) is one of a number of area churches and groups participating in the development and operation of the Family Harbor House. Volunteers provide on-site supervision of Family Harbor House during its 24 hours of operation. Volunteers are not be expected to provide any special services and are there to provide basic supervision of the facility and connect or communicate any needs that arise. There are two volunteers on site at all times. Family Harbor House volunteers are provided orientation and training before volunteering with the program.
If you have questions about the program and volunteering, please reach out to volunteer coordinator Chris Cusson (EMAIL) who coordinates volunteers for the UUCB part of the Family Harbor House project.

Pledge to Reduce Our Use of Plastics
From Your Climate Action Team:Consider this Pledge to Reduce Our Use of Plastics: “What we do to the Earth, we do to ourselves.” - Chief Joseph, Nez Perce
During our annual meeting on May 17, the congregation will vote on adopting the “Pledge To Reduce Plastic” developed by a committee of the Belfast Bay Watershed Coalition and promoted by the Waldo County Climate Action Coalition. The UUCB council confirmed their unanimous support on April 15 and we want to share some background information with you prior to the vote.
The pledge reads: The UU Church of Belfast pledges to use reusable or home-compostable items whenever possible at our meetings & events (metal cutlery, washable mugs and plates, wood or
bamboo cutlery, and paper straws).
We believe that the pledge would apply to food served at church events, and also to our use of plastics in general, especially in the kitchen. We have already made good progress by removing our collection of plastic tableware and nearly all of our plastic dishes from the kitchen. We also plan to reduce our remaining plastic utensils and containers.
There are many reasons why we might want to reduce our use of plastics: (1) plastics are made from fossil fuels; (2) 80% + are single-use which are discarded in landfills or roadsides and can contaminate fresh and saltwater bodies; (3) they release microplastics that eventually contaminate wildlife and our own bodies; and (4) there are viable alternatives for most single-use and multiple-use
plastics.
How will our church life change if we adopt this pledge? It is a goal and a reflection of our values, not a mandate. We will ask that any events held in our building respect limits set on plastic use whenever possible. Your Climate Action Team will continue to help everyone learn about common sense alternatives to plastic, contributing to the health and wellbeing of ourselves and the greater community.
