The Transitional Housing Program of the Midcoast Maine Homeless Coalition – UU Belfast Volunteers are Needed!
Opened in January
Family Harbor House, a transitional housing facility in 2,200 square feet of space, opened in January 2026 at Belfast United Methodist Church. The facility can house up to four families at a time, up to 15 people.
Future home of the Family Harbor House Modifications to the building were required, including updating two half bathrooms to full bathrooms, dividing one large room into two sleeping rooms, updating a kitchen, adding a washer and dryer, and installing fire doors and smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Whitecap Builders donated design and labor costs. MMHC also worked with Viking Lumber, which donated materials.
UUCB Volunteers for the Family Harbor House Program are coordinated by Chris Cusson.
Chris and his family moved to Belfast last year and became involved at UUCB. Chris is a captain with the Maine State Ferry Service. In part of his role with the Ferry Service, he coordinates and schedules all the captains and crews for the Ferry Service vessels. Chris has previous experience as a volunteer coordinator with the U.S. Brig Niagara and Erie Maritime Museum in Erie, PA.
